Those Were the Days

Original Song: "Those Were the Days" by Mary Hopkin

Once upon a time there were some people
Met up every month to just geek out
They would talk about the latest hardware
And the software they can't live without

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
It was the birth of personal PCs
We'd form computer clubs
That met in homes and pubs
For we were nerds and early adoptees

Then the busy years went rushing by us
What was novel now was commonplace
We no longer met to share our stories
Or peruse the shareware marketplace

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd talk of RAM and monochrome displays
We'd overclock our chips
In search of extra MIPS
Those were the days
Oh, yes, those were the days

Just tonight I found a box of freeware
All on disks from way back in the day
I no longer have a way to use them
Even if the data's still ok

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
Our cases all were lovely shades of gray
We'd buy a custom mod
To get 600 baud
Those were the days
Oh, yes, those were the days

Though I often think of times behind us
Remembering the past nostalgically
I don't want to put a halt on progress
Just give me cutting edge technology

These are the days my friend
But they will always end
And be replaced by what no one can say
And sometime later on
We'll grieve today is gone
These are the days
Oh, yes, these are the days
